- Smell Gas? Act Fast!
There is no charge to respond to and investigate a natural gas odor. The UGI Utilities gas emergency line 800-276-2722 is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
What does natural gas smell like?
Natural gas is naturally odorless and colorless. To make natural gas detectable, a chemical known as Mercaptan is added. Mercaptan has a smell that is similar to rotten eggs. If your nose detects this unique odor, it is critical that you leave the area and contact UGI immediately at 800-276-2722 or call 911. UGI investigates all reports fast and as a free service to our community.
What should I do if I smell gas?
- Leave the area immediately and evacuate others.
- Move at least the length of a football field away from the building.
- Do not start your car, light matches, or re-light a pilot light. Using battery operated equipment, including cell phones, garage door openers or doorbells, near a leak could cause a spark.
- From a safe distance, call UGI at 800-276-2722 or dial 911. Don’t assume someone else has already called and do not report it by email or social media.
- Do not re-enter the home or building until it has been inspected by a UGI service technician.
