UGI Upgrades Fueling Customer Growth and Energy Cost-Savings

02 Jul 2024

Efficiency, savings, and safety. That’s what new customers along UGI project routes want as they make the choice to convert to natural gas.

Ann, a homeowner on Pleasure Road in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, saw a notice on her door that UGI was replacing a gas main on her street. She jumped at the opportunity to convert from oil to natural gas. On her first bill since the switch, she saw hundreds of dollars in savings. Three of her neighbors also converted. In fact, every 50 minutes UGI Utilities adds a new Pennsylvania natural gas customer.

This year, UGI is replacing 50 miles of cast iron and bare steel gas mains with contemporary materials such as high-density plastic and protected steel. The projects present an opportunity for homes and businesses to convert, typically with no charge for the installation of gas service lines and meters.

Jay Rader runs Contractor Equipment, Inc. in Whitehall in Lehigh County. UGI is replacing a gas main along Columbia Street, and Jay decided to add natural gas service to a property he owns next door. He made the move to replace an old oil heating system with a new more-efficient natural gas heating system.

“I knew I had to replace the old system and with the opportunity of natural gas why not take advantage of it for cost savings,” says Rader.

The latest U.S. Department of Energy data finds natural gas is 2 times more affordable than No. 2 heating oil (and 3.3 times more affordable than electricity). Residential natural gas customers realize annual energy savings of approximately $1,223 compared to oil homes.
