Supporting Food Security Across Our Service Area

The foundation of a strong community rests on the ability of people to have stable access to affordable food. According to Feeding America, 1 in 8 people face hunger in Pennsylvania. In an effort to support safe and sustainable communities, UGI Utilities is dedicated to increasing food security in the communities in which our customers and employees live and work.

Throughout the month of April, UGI Utilities offices participated in a Company-Wide Food Drive that supported 28 food security organizations across our service territory.

In our Denver headquarters, employees donated 281 pounds of food and personal care items to Real Life Community Services, which provides food support to Cocalico region residents through the Power Packs Project and their food pantry.

At our Reading – Morgantown Road office, more than 100 food items were collected for New Journey Community Outreach, which supports Reading residents through a food pantry and lunch distributions.

Employees from our Wilkes Barre and Edwardsville offices donated 239 pounds of food for the Commission on Economic Opportunity’s food bank, which distributes food to more than 356 partner agencies in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Susquehanna, and Wyoming counties.

In addition to participating in the company-wide food drive, employees often volunteer at local organizations to support food security.

So far in 2024, our employees have made the following impact:

• While volunteering at Cocoa Packs, employees put together 200 snack packs for local students. Cocoa Packs serves 1,300 students in Dauphin, Cumberland, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties.
• Ahead of the Easter holiday, UGI Utilities employees helped to distribute food to 4,000 families in the Scranton area at the Friends of the Poor Easter Food Giveaway.
• Employee volunteers packed food boxes for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank which serves over 200,000 people in 27 counties in Pennsylvania.
• Employees assisted Power Packs Project with two separate volunteer projects. Power Packs Project helps to feed Lancaster-area students and their families on weekends when school meals aren’t available. A Power Pack contains a recipe, all of the ingredients to make the meal, pantry staples, and local fresh milk and produce.
• The Customer Outreach Team volunteered at Helping Harvest in Reading to pack food boxes to distribute to their food program partners. In 2023, Helping Harvest distributed over 9.5 million pounds of food to more than 350 programs that feed the hungry in Berks and Schuylkill counties.
• Employees assisted Midwest Food Bank in Middletown by repackaging bulk food items and boxing food for distribution to local pantries.
• After helping to transform the Salvation Army Allentown’s garden, employees also helped to pack 100 bags of groceries for the organization’s next pantry distribution.
• Employee volunteers sorted and pack 8,865 pounds of food for Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County for the “Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive,” led by the United States Postal Service. The volunteers packed 316 food boxes which will be distributed to food pantries across Lancaster County.
