UGI Begins Major Upgrades to Distribution System into Bethlehem
16 Jul 2025
More natural gas will soon be flowing through two miles of new pipeline in Hellertown, Northampton County.
The multi-million dollar upgrade will increase the capacity of a critical pipeline fueling businesses and homes in the City of Bethlehem and surrounding communities.
The Hellertown project, which mostly runs along Easton Road, is one of nearly 200 system upgrade projects that UGI expects to complete in 2025. UGI anticipates having the work in Hellertown done in October.
The $314 million invested this year in UGI’s distribution system is part of UGI’s commitment to provide safe and reliable delivery of energy to its customers.
When the larger contemporary pipeline goes into service, a non-contemporary line will be retired.
By using new technology called cross compression to feed the gas into the new line, emissions during the construction process will be significantly reduced.
“UGI believes this new technology is the future of how we remove gas in higher pressure pipelines that we take out of service,” says Chris Brown, UGI’s Vice President of Natural Gas and Electric Operations. “Not only does it limit gas release, but it allows us to use the gas in the new system.”
Installing the new 11,000 feet of pipeline is also giving some residents along the project route the ability to convert to natural gas. As UGI continues to make system upgrades throughout the service area, more residents are taking advantage of the opportunity to add natural gas service to their home.
Brown says, “UGI is committed to providing reliable, affordable energy in the communities we serve. The system upgrades in Hellertown will provide even better service to an area that relies heavily on the natural gas we provide.”
