UGI Delivers Warmth During Recent Extreme Cold

04 Mar 2026

UGI’s upgrades, maintenance, and monitoring of its natural gas and electric distribution systems meant customers could count on safe and reliable service when they needed it most.

The normal temperature for late January and early February is 30 degrees.

However, from January 23 through February 8, the average temperature in UGI’s service territory was 14 degrees. UGI customers used 18% more natural gas during this extreme cold compared to their average usage during the same time period over the past five years. UGI closely monitored its distribution systems ensuring energy was available during this high demand.

With a customer care center staffed 24/7 and over 500 trained and qualified emergency responders, UGI can promptly respond to service outages, gas odor calls, and other related service calls. During the recent extreme weather, UGI maintained safe and reliable service with only minor service interruptions.

A Hellertown customer, dealing with a frozen meter, shared her thanks to the UGI employee who responded to her home. “Loss of heat in sub-freezing temperatures can be quite scary,” she said. “[He] was the ultimate professional explaining what was happening, giving reassurance that the problem would be fixed, making sure all gas appliances were safely working before he left.”

“UGI works to provide safe and reliable service every single day throughout the year. Our customers expect it and we do everything possible to make it happen,” says Chris Brown, UGI’s Vice President of Natural Gas and Electric Operations. “They needed warmth in these historically cold temperatures and UGI’s system and employees delivered.”

Proactive Investments Deliver Reliability

UGI’s system investments and continuous maintenance ensure reliability during extreme cold. This includes replacing pipelines with modern materials, managing vegetation near electric lines, and increasing leak surveys and survey technology.
