Celebrating 30 Years of Children’s Literacy Support
02 Aug 2021
Thirty years ago, UGI announced its partnership with Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) an organization that prepares and motivates children to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to children and families who need them most.
The UGI-RIF partnership began out of a UGI commitment to support the advancement of public education. Education experts agree that reading is the key to all learning, so improvement of early childhood literacy became a major component of our commitment.
UGI’s commitment also involves support from our employees, who volunteer their time at schools. UGI employees play a key role in the UGI-RIF partnership by volunteering to distribute free books to first graders at schools across the UGI service territory.
Employees also volunteer to portray “The Reading Wizard,” a life-size, UGI-created character that visits schools during book distributions to get children excited about reading.
Since 1991, UGI has distributed over 1.5 million books to more than 500,000 students. UGI employees have provided over 20,000 hours of volunteer service reading to children and helping with book distributions.
