Increasing Access to Play Spaces in Lock Haven

09 Aug 2024

Research confirms that play is a developmental necessity that sparks kids’ social, emotional, and physical development. Yet, many cities, school districts, park systems, and neighborhoods face inequitable access to dedicated play spaces. KABOOM! unites with communities to build play spaces to ensure every child has access to high-quality places to play, grow, and thrive. By increasing access to play spaces, KABOOM! hopes to increase a sense of belonging among residents and volunteers, as well as boost physical and mental health among children.

The Lock Haven community recently partnered with KABOOM! to build a playground in Hoberman Park. In May, children from the Lock Haven area shared drawings of their dream playgrounds and their ideas were integrated into the final design.

After the playground was designed, nearly 100 volunteers helped to build it from the ground up. In addition to the playground, volunteers installed picnic tables, benches, a stage, garden boxes, and a mural. Two UGI Utilities employees helped to assemble pieces of the playground, which features ADA-accessible ramps and swings.

“This opportunity connected me with other like-minded community members and coworkers to create a safe place for all children to play and grow,” says UGI employee Jessica Z. “It takes a village to maintain and create a thriving community for our children!”

“I cannot wait to see how everything turns out and how much joy it brings to the children and families that utilize the playground!” said UGI employee Heather M.

Thank you, Jessica and Heather, for your efforts to support children and families in your community!
