- Your UGI Bill Explained
We understand closely evaluating the components of your energy bill is probably not at the top of your to-do list. As you may have seen in recent news coverage, global energy prices are on the rise due to a number of factors which include production not keeping pace with demand as the economy recovers from the impacts of the pandemic in the U.S. and globally.
Even with recent increases in natural gas prices, it is still by-far the most economical way to fuel your home or business. In addition to saving money, natural gas also lowers your carbon footprint significantly more than other fossil fuels.

UGI Bill: Cost Breakdown
Residential Natural Gas Customer Bills
The cost of your bill is determined by:
Distribution and Customer Charges: As of December 1, 2024, about 59% of each residential bill is for the delivery and service costs to upgrade and maintain our natural gas facilities and to ensure we are delivering natural gas in a safe, reliable manner. This amount can be changed through a Base Rate Case, where the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission must approve any proposed increase.
Commodity Charge: This is the charge for the actual amount of energy you consume. For natural gas, it is presented in CCF (hundred cubic feet). As of December 1, 2024, the commodity component accounts for about 41% of your energy bill. Learn about more ways to conserve energy to help keep the commodity portion of your bill more manageable.
Purchased Gas Costs “Pass-Through”
Each quarter – December, March, June and September – UGI may request an adjustment, either an increase or decrease, to the Commodity cost. This is called the Purchased Gas Cost (or PGC) update. The PGC is a pass-through of costs incurred by the company to purchase gas. UGI does not profit on the purchased gas portion of a customer’s bill. UGI is required to purchase the least-cost available supply of natural gas.
UGI Protects Customers from Extreme Price Spikes
- PGC rate changes are capped at 25% in December, March, and June and 15% in September.
- UGI secures a portion of its gas supply in advance. As an example, UGI will have procured approximately 50% of our normal winter supply prior to the beginning of the heating season (October). This helps limit extreme changes that can occur during the heating season.
